5 Tips to Keep Germs Away from Kids

If you’re a parent you know that there’s nothing worse than having a sick child. A lot of attention gets paid to helping kids avoid spreading germs during flu season, but keeping kids healthy is should be an all-year focus. While it’s impossible to get kids 100% germ free, these five tips can help minimize the amount of germs kids bring home and spread.

Wash Kids Hands Frequently
It goes without being said that washing your hands is the first step in germ protection, but kids aren’t always thrilled about having to wash their hands all the time. If your little one puts up a fuss instead of washing their hands opt for antibacterial wipes for kids. Antibacterial wipes can get hands clean whether you are on the go or just at home fighting with a recalcitrant toddler. It’s important to make sure that you are using alcohol-free antibacterial wipes that are specifically meant for kids so that their delicate skin doesn’t get irritated.

Make Sure Kids are taking their Vitamins
A good multivitamin can help kids and adults alike to ward off colds when taken regularly. However, not all vitamins are good for everyone -make sure that you are only giving your child kid’s vitamins. Kid’s vitamins are specifically formulated to give your growing child the right amounts of the nutrients that they need. If your child doesn’t like the chewable vitamins, there are some excellent liquid vitamins for kids available.

Have Kids Take a Break from Sharing
Usually sharing is caring, but when your child has friends that are sick, or is out in public sharing is not the best idea. Explain to your child what germs are and how they can be passed from person to person, and tell that it’s okay not to share sometimes. You can do your part as well by making sure that your child isn’t borrowing items from other children or lending out their toys and belongings.

Keep Items out of Kids’ Mouths
Kids will put anything in their mouths! When your child is playing, keep a watchful eye out for them trying to put other kids’ toys or food in their mouths. Using the stern Mom “no” may discourage them from putting everything they find in their mouths, but it won’t stop it so just be cognizant at all times of what they are trying to feast on next.

Clean – A Lot
As a parent you already have to clean a lot (refer back to the previous point about kids putting EVRYTHING in their mouths), but if your child has friends that are sick or there’s something going around, you have to clean even more frequently and more thoroughly. Make sure to clean kids’ stuff (toys, eating utensils, etc.) and also household areas (plastic play room furniture, floors, high chairs, etc.) with soap and warm water.

It can be quite tiring to take all of the precautions needed to keep children from getting sick from germs that are spread at day care or school, but in the end if you can keep your little one healthy it will all be worth it! Do you have some good tips to pass along? Share them below!
