Generic vs. Brand Name Products

When you go to the pharmacy, it is inevitable that you will notice a difference between generic and brand name prescription drugs. The similarities and differences can cause confusion for those who do not know the difference, or even know if there is a difference.  Some may think that the cheaper generic product is inferior to the brand name product, but the truth is that generic drugs and are the same drug and use the same active ingredients.
What are Generic Drugs?
A generic drug most commonly refers to a drug that is interchangeable with another branded product in an individual patent.  It is usually manufactured without a license from the innovator company. They are marketed after the patent or other exclusivity rights have expired.  The products must also be bioequivalent.
What is Bioequivalence?
Bioequivalence means that two products produce similar plasma concentrations of active ingredients so their clinical effects can be expected to be the same.  Pharmaceutical equivalence implies the same amount of the same active substances, in the same dosage form, for the same route of administration and meeting the same or comparable standards. In order for the generic product to be approved, it must be tested alongside the brand name products to see if it results in the same results by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
How do Doctors and Pharmacists Treat Generic Drugs?
In Australia, doctors can prescribe a generic or brand name drug.  Brand substitution is permitted by the Brand Substitution Policy, allowing the pharmacist to make substitutions without seeking the advice of the prescriber.  In some cases, the prescriber may prefer one brand over another, in which case they are able to indicate that on the prescription. The software Doctors use when prescribing medicine has also been changed to default to the generic drug.  The doctor can prescribe a brand name drug, but will have to indicate that on the prescription.
Overall, generic drugs in Australia are well regulated and there is no evidence that they are inferior or dangerous in comparison to the brand name product.  Generic drugs are cost effective, allowing consumers and the government to save money and expanding the use of helpful drugs.
